Passport, visa and BRP problems
Since October 5, 2020, 'Tier 4 (General)' leave has been replaced by 'Student' permission, and 'Tier 4 (Child)' leave has been replaced by 'Child student' permission. Tier 4 (General) is included in 'Student,' while Tier 4 (Child student) is included in 'Child student' (Child).
A vignette is a sticker that is placed in your passport after you have successfully applied for entry clearance. It comprises basic information about you as well as the permission you have been granted.
A Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) is a card-shaped document issued by the Home Office to students (and their partners and children) as proof of immigration permission (also known as permission to enter or stay). The BRP card features a microchip that stores two of your fingerprints as well as a digital image.
As part of the application process (whether outside or inside the UK), you must provide your fingerprints and have your image taken (these are known as your "biometrics").
Please check our article on applying for Student route immigration approval from outside the UK and within the UK for additional information on the procedure of providing your biometrics.
If your immigration application is approved, you will be given one of the following documents: a vignette for the duration of your stay; a 90-day vignette (previously a 30-day vignette); or a biometric residence permit (BRP).
The actions to take are outlined below if you have one of these documents and it is lost, stolen, or damaged, and/or it includes errors, and/or you acquire a new passport while you are in possession of the document.
See Report change of circumstances for information on what to do if your circumstances change while you are in possession of one of these documents.
If your visa vignette is misplaced, stolen, or damaged while in the UK,
If you lose, steal, or damage your visa vignette while in the UK, you must:
Notify the Home Office of the theft or loss.
Make an application for a new passport.
If you have not yet acquired your BRP, the Home Office will advise you on what steps you must take.
If your visa vignette is lost, stolen, or damaged in the UK, please contact the compliance team for assistance.
If your BRP is lost, stolen, or damaged inside or outside the UK, please contact us.
If you have lost or stolen your BRP card, you must notify the Home Office as soon as possible so that it can be cancelled.
If you recover your BRP after reporting it as lost or stolen, you will not be allowed to use it. When you report your BRP as lost or stolen, the Home Office will contact you within one working day.
More information can be found in the Home Office's guidance on coping with lost or stolen BRPs.
