How to Check your UK Visa Application Status

If you are awaiting a decision on a UK visa application, checking the progress of your application might be critical to planning ahead, especially if you are under time constraints for a decision.

The following information explains how UK visa applicants can check the status of their applications, whether they are applying to extend an existing visa or move to a different type of visa from within the UK, or whether they are applying for entrance clearance or leave to enter the UK from another country.

We also provide basic recommendations on standard and premium visa processing timelines (however this does not take into account any current delays caused by the COVID-19 panda).

Checking the status of your UK visa application from within the UK

The majority of applications to extend leave to remain in the UK, including applications to change visa categories, as well as applications for settlement and citizenship, are now made through the UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS).

The UK Home Office launched UKVCAS to expedite the processing of in-country additional leave to stay applications. Applicants must attend a single visit to have their identification validated, enrol any biometric information (fingerprints and photos), and provide supporting paperwork.

Applicants, however, will not be granted a decision at their UKVCAS session. The visa application and supporting documentation will be forwarded to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) for processing. UKVI is a branch of the Home Office in charge of the UK's visa system, and each case will be assigned to a single case worker for a decision to be made.

If you have already submitted a UK visa application and are awaiting a response, go to the GOV.UK website to find general information and updates from UKVI on visa processing. You cannot presently track your individual visa application online, but you can use an online tool to find out which department you should contact for your specific situation.

When utilising this tool, you will be asked a few questions concerning your application, such as the case reference number assigned when you submitted the application, and you should be given contact information for various departments at UKVI.

You can also contact the relevant UKVI department by phone. The contact centre (0300 123 2241) is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. You will be able to inquire about the progress of your application and follow your visa application in the United Kingdom. Please keep in mind that the contact centre employees cannot provide advice about your specific circumstances or how they will affect the outcome of the call.

How to Check the Status of a UK Visa Application Made Outside the UK

When applying for a visa from outside the UK, you must go to a visa application centre in the nation from which you are applying and present your biometric information, as well as the necessary documents.

You will not receive a decision on your application at your appointment to enrol your biometric information and present your supporting papers, as you would with an in-country visa application. Instead, you will have to wait for a decision from UKVI.

If you have any questions concerning your application, please contact UKVI at 00 44 203 481 1736. This is available 24 hours a day, Monday through Friday, at a cost of £1.37 a minute in addition to your standard network charges. You can also utilise the UKVI web service, which can be found at www.gov.uk/contact-ukvi-inside-outside-uk. Email is frequently the best way to verify the status of your UK visa application because your email inquiry is more likely to be forwarded to the caseworker assigned to your specific application.

What are the typical processing times for visa applications to the United Kingdom?

The length of time it takes to process your UK visa application will be determined mostly by whether you have sought to enter or remain in the UK. Your application wait times may also be affected by the type of visa you are applying for.

In general, visa applications submitted from outside the UK will have much shorter wait times than in-country applications, though you should be able to stay in the UK pending any decision from UKVI as long as you have submitted your application to extend your leave to remain or switch to another category before your current visa expires.

Within the United Kingdom

According to current official wait times, the usual processing period for those of you applying to stay in the UK on a temporary basis, such as spouses, workers, students, and Tier 1 general and entrepreneurs, is 8 weeks. Applications for indefinite permission to remain made from within the UK are typically processed within 6 months.

Outside of the United Kingdom

For those of you applying from outside the UK, it is predicted that 90% of non-settlement applications will be processed within 3 weeks, 98 percent within 6 weeks, and 100% within 12 weeks after the application date, where 1 week is 5 working days.

It is predicted that 98.5 percent of settlement applications from outside the UK will be dealt with within 12 weeks of the application date, and 100 percent will be dealt with within 24 weeks of the application date, where 1 week equals 5 working days.
