How does the new UK points-based immigration system work?
Staff shortages in the food industry and among HGV drivers have prompted the government to consider changing the immigration system to allow more workers to enter the country.
Since the beginning of 2021, European Union (EU) individuals who are not already residents of the United Kingdom have been treated in the same manner as those from the rest of the globe.
It means that anyone wishing to live and work in the United Kingdom must apply using a points-based system.
According to Environment Secretary George Eustice, the government is looking at whether adjustments to the Seasonal Agricultural Workers' Scheme (SAWS) could be made. SAWS is a quota-based scheme that permits farmers to hire workers from overseas to work for up to six months in a specific job.
Why has immigration to the United Kingdom changed?
People from EU countries enjoyed an automatic right to work in the UK when the UK was a member of the EU.
Taking back control of immigration was a major topic of the Leave campaign during the 2016 referendum.
How are points assigned?
Migrant workers who wish to relocate to the United Kingdom must obtain 70 points in order to be eligible for a visa.
A job offer from an approved business for a skilled profession and the ability to communicate in English will get you 50 points.
The applicant can earn the remaining 20 points if their annual salary is at least £25,600.
They can also get points for possessing stronger qualifications (10 points for a relevant PhD, or 20 points for a PhD in science, technology, engineering, or maths) or an offer of a job in which the UK is short (20 points), even if it pays less.
How do you apply for jobs in the United Kingdom?
Although applications can be started online, some people will need to go to a visa application centre to establish their identity and show the relevant documentation.
These may include a sponsorship certificate from a prospective UK employer as well as confirmation of English proficiency.
How much will it set you back?
The application price will be determined by how long the job seeker intends to work in the UK and whether their employment is on a list of skills that the UK is short of, such as vets and web designers.
If their abilities do not appear on the list, the normal charge will be between £610 and £1,408 per person.
When applying, job seekers must also pay a health fee of £624 per person per year, which is refundable if they are denied a visa.
They will also need to demonstrate that they have the financial resources to maintain themselves in the UK, which normally entails having at least £1,270 ready.
